About Honda CRF150L For Rent In Hanoi

The Honda CRF150L is a lightweight dual-sport off-road motorcycle, sometimes categorized as a small dual enduro. It is powered by a Euro 3-compliant 149.2cc engine producing around 12 HP and 12.43 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Compared with conventional street motorcycles, the CRF150L has larger off-road wheels, impressive suspension travel, and generous ground clearance, making it much more capable on dirt roads, gravel, farm tracks, and moderate mountain trails. The model was first launched in Indonesia in 2017 and soon became available in Vietnam. Although Honda has traditionally focused heavily on scooters in Vietnam, the CRF150L provides a very different option for riders looking for a genuine Honda trail bike for exploring Vietnam.

Honda CRF150L – 150cc Engine

The 149cc engine delivers smooth and predictable power, while the five-speed gearbox offers useful flexibility on both paved roads and off-road trails. The electric starter makes starting the bike convenient, especially early in the morning. A kick starter is also available as a backup if the battery becomes flat or there is an electrical problem.

From our experience with this model, the cylinder kit is not as durable as we would like. We had to replace a cylinder kit on one motorcycle before reaching 10,000 km. Fortunately, the engine shares several components with the Honda XR150L and other Honda 150cc motorcycles, so replacement parts are relatively inexpensive and easy to find in Vietnam.

Another downside of the CRF150L engine is the lack of a counter-balancer. This makes the engine feel less smooth than the Honda XR150L at certain engine speeds. We have addressed this on our bikes by fitting a crankshaft and balancer from the XR150L, improving the overall smoothness.

In our opinion, Honda could have used a more advanced water-cooled 150cc engine similar to the unit found in the Honda Winner/Supra GTR 150. That engine offers significantly more power, at nearly 16 HP, while providing a smoother and stronger riding experience.

Fuel Injection

Honda’s advanced PGM-FI fuel injection system makes the CRF150L very easy to start in the morning and in different weather conditions. Fuel injection also provides smooth throttle response and efficient fuel delivery.

However, because of its relatively small engine displacement and lower power output, acceleration is not as strong as the Honda XR150L. If you prefer more power for highway riding, mountain roads, or longer trips, we recommend the Honda XR150L instead.

Seat

The seat is relatively small, narrow, and firm, which is one of the main downsides of the Honda CRF series. This design is useful for off-road riding because it allows the rider to move around the motorcycle easily, but it is less comfortable during long hours on paved roads.

For longer journeys, we recommend taking regular breaks. Carrying a small water or air cushion can also make the seat considerably more comfortable.

Suspension

We really like the Honda CRF150L suspension system. The 35mm inverted front fork and Pro-Link rear suspension provide excellent performance for a lightweight 150cc dual-sport motorcycle.

The combination of long suspension travel, high ground clearance, and large 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels makes the CRF150L particularly capable on rough roads, gravel, dirt tracks, farm roads, and moderate off-road terrain. For us, the suspension is probably the best feature of this model.

Front & Rear Disc Brakes

The Honda CRF150L is equipped with front and rear disc brakes, providing strong and predictable braking performance on both paved and unpaved roads. This is an important advantage when riding in the mountains, particularly on steep downhill sections or loose surfaces.

For a lightweight 150cc off-road motorcycle, the braking system provides good control and confidence.

Transmission

The standard front sprocket has 15 teeth, while the rear sprocket has 49 teeth, using a 428-size drive chain. The original chain is relatively basic and, from our experience, can wear faster than a higher-quality chain.

The original 15/49 gearing provides a reasonable balance between off-road riding and highway use. However, for riders who spend more time on trails, we recommend upgrading to a 520 O-ring chain together with a 13/41 front/rear sprocket combination. This setup provides useful gearing for off-road riding and generally offers better durability.

Dashboard

The full digital dashboard provides essential riding information at a glance. Its simple layout makes it easy to read while riding and adds to the practical character of the CRF150L.

Rear Rack

The practical multi-function rear rack allows you to carry additional luggage and equipment. It is especially useful when taking the Honda CRF150L on a multi-day motorcycle trip in Vietnam.

Headlight

The motorcycle is equipped with AHO (Automatic Headlight On) and a modern headlight inspired by Honda’s larger CRF models. The wider design improves visibility and gives the CRF150L a distinctive modern enduro appearance.

Important

  • The Honda CRF150L is not really suitable for riding two-up on long trips because of its relatively modest power, narrow seat, and the additional weight of a passenger and luggage. Ideally, riding solo is the best option, especially when exploring mountain roads and off-road trails. If you need to ride two-up, take regular breaks and avoid riding long distances every day, particularly after dark or in rainy conditions.
  • We are based in Hanoi, Northern Vietnam only. Therefore, we do not offer motorbike rental outside Hanoi or one-way motorcycle rental. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend another rental company because we do not personally know the condition of their motorcycles or the quality of their services.

To get an idea of which off-road motorbike is best for your Vietnam adventure, please watch the video below. Although the CRF150L cannot handle extreme off-road terrain as well as the larger Honda CRF250L, it is still an excellent lightweight option for exploring Vietnam’s back roads, mountain trails, dirt roads, and countryside.
